JEC Sports Summit: Composites at the heart of sports innovation
Français English

Approaching the 2024 Games, JEC World has chosen to highlight the undeniable impact of composite materials on the world of sports through a dedicated day on March 7, 2024. Developed with the Global Sports Week Paris, France’s leading international forum for the sports ecosystem, this Sports Summit will showcase concrete examples of innovations that increases the level of competition in each discipline.

The Sports Summit program

9:30 – 9:40
WELCOME TO JEC SPORTS SUMMIT

Discover the highlights of the Sports Summit and join us for an insightful exploration into the cutting-edge innovation shaping the future of sport through composite materials. At the intersection of the search for increased performance and the necessary quest for more responsible production processes, deep dive into the topics that will be covered by our experts during this morning of exchanges.
• Thomas Desson, Sports Summit MC

9.40 – 10.15
THE MATERIAL AT THE HEART OF THE PERFORMANCE

When performing at the highest level, the sports equipment makes a real difference to be able break records or win titles. Composites have properties of lightness, but also resilience, rigidity, oriented deformation that can bring a plus when athletes are in the quest of going faster, higher, or further. In this area, the growing attention given to sustainable and natural materials must not impact the established performance standards.
• Thomas Dupont, Group Composite Expertise Manager, Look / Corima
• Xavier Roussin Bouchard, Innovation Director, Rossignol
• Etienne Hubert, French sprint canoeist, World Champion
MODERATOR: Thomas Desson

10.20 – 10.55
SPORTS, COMPOSITES INNOVATION LABORATORY

New materials, new processes, sport is a playground for testing innovations that other sectors can only adopt and test after long industrial certification and implementation processes. How big companies use the sports industry to test new processes, technics… while trying to implement more natural fibers and responsible production processes?
• Ophélie Westphal, R&D Manager, Demgy
• Damian Cessario, Founder & CEO, V-Carbon
• Jan-Anders Mansson, Professor / Expert, University / Research
MODERATOR: Tim Howland, Sport business and composite expert

11.00 – 11.35
SPORT FOR ALL WITH COMPOSITES

Composite materials are central in the equipment for Paralympic sports, from professional to everyday athletes with physical disability. In this area, the search for performance meets the necessity to provide accessible and affordable gear (wheelchairs and prothesis) to the greatest number, while keeping a high attention to the environmental impact of their life-cycle assessment.
• Heinrich Popow, German athlete, Paralympic Champion in London 2012 (100m T42) and Rio 2016 (long jump) / Ottobock Ambassador
• Orianne Lopez, French athlete, Physical and Rehabilitation Physician at the French National Paralympic Committee
• Christophe Lecomte, VP of Biomechanical Solutions – Research & Development, Össur
MODERATOR: Thomas Desson

11.40 – 12.15
FOIL & COMPOSITES

Composite technology has revolutionized competitive water sports, enhancing speed and maneuverability of even the biggest boats, until enabling them to fly over the water surface. They have a tangible contribution of the environmental impact of competitive water sports and have a key role to play in the transformation of maritime transport and wider shipping industry.
• Tom Laperche, French sailor, Co-Skipper Trimaran Ultim SVR-Lazartigue, MER CONCEPT
• Romain Cachia, Technical Director, CDK Technologies
• David de Prémorel, CEO, Finot-conq architects
• Fabio Bressan, Vice President of Business Development Americas, PERSICO GROUP
MODERATOR: Luca RIZZOTTI, Founder, Foiling Organization

12.15 – 12:30 – Conclusion
Composites and Sports: the era of optimized performance

The increasing use of composites in sports is redefining the standards of performance. These materials offer a unique combination of lightness, strength, and flexibility, enabling the manufacturing of cutting-edge sports equipment. From traditional Olympic and Paralympic sports like athletics and cycling to emerging disciplines like skateboarding, composites are omnipresent and greatly contribute to the evolution of athletic performances.

Discover Composites in Hall 6 Entrance

JEC World 2024 nods to the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games with a dedicated exhibition area! This exhibition will be an opportunity to showcase the close links between composites and sports, as well as the increasing use of composites in the past few years in 18 out of the 28 sports featured in the Summer Games.
The “Discover Composites” exhibition will be located at the entrance of Hall 6, in the main gallery. It will showcase the evolution of composite applications in various disciplines up to the present day, through a variety of engaging formats, including real products and processes, as well as material samples.

With the Sport Summit, JEC World 2024 offers much more than a mere industrial event. It celebrates a unique convergence between the ingenuity of composites and sporting excellence, highlighting how these materials transform every discipline.
